Sheriff’s Office: 8 pounds of cannabis seized from vehicle after chase in Freeport

FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) – Two men face charges after a high-speed chase Wednesday in rural Freeport led to a drug bust, according to the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office.
Darren Miller, 36, of Freeport, is charged with possession with intent to deliver cannabis (2000-5000 grams), aggravated fleeing to elude a peace officer and resisting a peace officer. He also faces a misdemeanor charge for driving while license revoked.

Around 5:15 p.m. July 2, a sheriff’s deputy patrolling Business Route 20 near Springfield Road noticed a a westbound vehicle driven by Miller, who the deputy knew to have a revoked driver’s license. When the deputy tried to pull Miller over, the vehicle reportedly sped into Freeport on Adams Avenue, reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour.
After a short chase, the vehicle stopped near Adams and Float avenues and three people got out and ran. Miller was arrested by the deputy in the 500 block of S. Liberty Avenue, and Thompson, a passenger in the vehicle was arrested by an assisting Freeport police officer.
Investigators say the third person in the vehicle was not found and was last seen running near Ottawa and Winneshiek Street.
When deputies searched the vehicle, they claim they discovered around eight pounds of cannabis.

Miller is being held in the Stephenson County Jail pending the outcome of a detention hearing. Thompson was released under the Pre-Trial Fairness Act.
