Toronto is under a snowfall warning from Environment Canada Monday, with the worst of it expected to hit morning rush hour traffic.
The city could get up to 10 centimetres of snow, according to the weather agency. But it’s the timing of the snowfall, not the amount, that could cause the most trouble.
“Although modest snowfall amounts are expected, the timing of this snow will be problematic,” according to the Environment Canada warning. “Because the holiday season is now behind us, and traffic patterns should be closer to normal, this snow is expected to have more of an impact on the morning commute.”
It may be hard to navigate roads and walkways as snow accumulates, and visibility may be reduced at times, Environment Canada said. That could have a “significant impact” on morning rush hour traffic, the weather agency said, and commuters are warned to allow extra time for travel.
Snowfall is expected to begin early in the morning and end Monday afternoon.
In a news release, the City of Toronto said crews will salt roads as soon as snow begins to fall, and multiple rounds of plowing are expected throughout the day.
The city’s warming centres will remain open Monday, with walk-ins welcome, the city said. The centres offer a sheltered place to rest, get meals and access washroom facilities, and are located here:
- 136 Spadina Road
- 81 Elizabeth Street
- 349 George Street
- 12 Holmes Avenue
- 885 Scarborough Golf Club Road
