Solvay Library fosters inclusive environment for those with disabilities

SOLVAY, N.Y. — The Solvay Library is transforming its space to create an inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities, offering events that cater to their needs. One such event is a toned-down bingo game, designed to be accessible and welcoming.

Jon Nagy, co-founder of CNY Community Friends, highlighted the importance of these events. “Individuals with developmental disabilities, they can go to the bingo and be able to associate with their friends, be able to hang out in a non-constrictive environment, open to the community, and just welcome to the community,” he said.

The bingo games are adapted to those with disabilities and their caregivers, allowing participants to enjoy the activity without being overwhelmed. “If there’s too many people, they can sit in a side room, and they can still participate, but with what their needs are, with sound restrictions and if it gets too loud they can have their headphones on, and be able to deal with the sound,” Nagy explained.

At the heart of these efforts is a commitment to connection and inclusivity. “We have an open table policy where everyone is welcome, we are not a clique, we’re very open to new friends and people in the community,” said Nagy.

The library system’s openness has been instrumental in supporting these initiatives. “The library system has been very open with a lot of our people. In the community, there are a lot of places that utilize the library for their programs open and not open to the community,” Nagy added.
