Spaceballs 2 Announces Production Has Started With A Perfect Star Wars Gag

September 25, 2025

After decades of waiting, and with Star Wars projects like The Mandalorian and Grogu in the pipeline, somehow the Schwartz has returned. Set for release in 2027, Spaceballs: The Schwartz Awakens will arrive to fulfill a promise Mel Brooks made as a joke in his 1987 classic. Production has just started, and with a photo that commemorates this occasion, while also committing to the bit.

Through a tasteful black and white photo shared by Amazon-MGM Studios’ social media presence, “Spaceballs: The Table Read” was unveiled. Gathering the cast of notables on tap to make sure The Schwartz Awakens properly, you may have a sense of deja vu when looking at the post shared below:

Leave it to co-writer/co-star/co-producer Josh Gad and company to lovingly mock the 2014 table read snap from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Naturally Gad was present for the Spaceballs 2 image, as were returning cast members Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, and George Wyner. But what may have been the most exciting sight to see, besides new cast members Lewis Pullman and Keke Palmer present in the mix, were some easter eggs.

Showing off Barf’s oversized hydrant and a seated pepperoni pizza, absent friends were present in spirit as those references nodded to the late John Candy and Dom DeLuise. Also, while Mel Brooks wasn’t physically in the room, both a laptop displaying his face and the costume for (Just Plain) Yoghurt were on hand to represent the series creator/co-star.

In a bid to save the best for last, I want to highlight something that raises Spaceballs: The Schwartz Awakens’ status as a hotly anticipated legacy-quel. If you look at the 9 o’clock position of the photo, there’s a gentleman dressed in black and wearing glasses. I think that’s none other than the iconic Rick Moranis – who was confirmed by Amazon-MGM Studios (via Variety) as coming out of retirement for the project.

This is about the time I’d get hyped and start spinning webs on what this could all mean; but we’re in very early days on this one. For now, I’ll try not to bore anyone with my theory on how Josh Gad’s mysterious character is a descendant of Barf – based on how the giant fire hydrant is placed behind him. Rather, I’ll just remind you all that Spaceballs 2 will laugh its way into our galaxy at some point in 2027. Until next time my friends, may the Schwartz be with you!
