SpaceX has officially filed for what could be the largest initial public offering (IPO) in American history, targeting a valuation of $2 trillion.

Historical IPO Performance Data

Research from a finance professor at the University of Florida indicates that initial public offerings generally underperform comparable public firms. Over a three-year period, they typically trail the broader market by close to twenty percent.

However, performance varies across company types. Firms with substantial revenue show minimal underperformance. Companies not primarily in the technology sector represent a group that underperforms significantly.

Comparable Recent IPO Outcomes

Examining recent large, high-interest offerings reveals mixed results for investors. Meta Platforms, which went public in May 2012, has delivered substantial gains from its IPO price. An initial investment of one thousand dollars would now be valued at approximately sixteen thousand six hundred dollars.

Uber Technologies held its IPO in May 2019. A similar investment made then would be worth around one thousand seven hundred forty dollars today, a return that did not match the broader market over the same period.

Rivian Automotive went public in November 2021. An investment of one thousand dollars at its IPO would currently be worth about one hundred ninety-eight dollars, representing a significant decline.
