SpaceX IPO: Could It Be a $1.75 Trillion Market Cap Winner or a Speculative Bubble?

SpaceX is preparing to become a publicly traded company in the coming months, with an expected valuation of $1.75 trillion, according to a report from Yahoo Finance. That market capitalization would make it the largest initial public offering in history, surpassing the current record holder, Alibaba Group Holding, which went public in 2014 at roughly $169 billion.

Lessons from past mega-IPOs

Examining previous large IPOs offers insight into whether SpaceX could be a long-term winner or a speculative bubble. Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, went public in May 2014 at a market cap of about $81 billion. In the four months after its IPO, the stock dropped more than 50%. Many investors at the time considered it overpriced and overhyped, and the company faced uncertainty around monetizing mobile advertising. Ultimately, Meta generated billions in mobile ad revenue, now commands a daily audience of 3.58 billion people across its platforms, and has delivered a lifetime return of roughly 1,640%.

Arm Holdings, a British semiconductor and software design company, went public in September 2023 at a market cap of $54.5 billion. Its stock rose, experienced volatility, and finished the year up 47%. Over the last two and a half years, the stock has more than quadrupled, helped by strong demand for AI chips and its dominance in the smartphone market. The company could also benefit from growing adoption of edge AI.

When mega-IPOs falter

Not all large IPOs succeed over the long term. Alibaba, the previous IPO champion, saw its shares more than double between its September 2014 debut and August 2020. However, by mid-2022 the stock had surrendered nearly all of those gains. Although Alibaba has recovered somewhat, it remains well below its peak.
