SpaceX IPO: Elon Musk to Take Entire Company Public Including X and xAI

SpaceX could conduct an initial public offering within the next couple of months, according to a report published on May 10, 2026. The source, Yahoo Finance, notes that investors have long awaited the opportunity to own shares in Elon Musk’s space company. While earlier speculation centered on a separate IPO for the Starlink subsidiary, Musk has reportedly decided to take the entire company public, also including social media platform X and artificial intelligence firm xAI in the offering.

This development is not viewed positively for investors. Although SpaceX is currently profitable, multiple media reports indicate that both X and xAI are operating at a loss. These losses may be substantial enough to render the entire IPO unprofitable. If SpaceX achieves profitability in the future, it will likely be attributable to Starlink alone.

Starlink operates the largest and most profitable satellite constellation in orbit, with over 10,000 communications satellites. In 2025, Starlink generated $10.4 billion of SpaceX’s $15 billion in total sales. For 2026, space research firm Payload estimates Starlink sales will surge 80% to $18.7 billion, accounting for nearly 80% of all SpaceX revenue. Internal SpaceX documents forecast an operating profit margin as high as 60% from the Starlink business, contrasting sharply with negative margins at X and xAI.

Starlink now faces competition from Amazon. Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) has its own satellite communications network plan called Amazon Leo. After a standing start last year, Amazon has used rockets from United Launch Alliance, Arianespace, and SpaceX itself to launch approximately 300 Leo satellites into orbit over the past year. In April, Amazon announced it will expand its constellation by acquiring Globalstar (NASDAQ: GSAT) for $11.6 billion, adding another couple of dozen satellites.

High profit margins typically attract competition, leading to price wars and declining margins for existing players—a dynamic beneficial for consumers but potentially detrimental to SpaceX’s long-term profitability.
