Spark it up: 13 Minnesota cities and counties want pot shops

Ground recently broke “on what could be one of the first government-run cannabis dispensaries to open in the U.S. since 2015,” MPR News reports. Where? Anoka. The town on the Rum River is one of 13 cities and counties in Minnesota that are vying for a license to operate a cannabis store.
This Sunday marks the five-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, an event that sparked reflection among many in the law enforcement community, including the City of Golden Valley. Some agencies have embraced change, while others have not. As the Minnesota Star Tribune reports, “The Golden Valley Police Department is now smaller, younger and more diverse than it was five years ago. The city’s new chief and mayor are trying to heal fractures within the community. The upheaval in Golden Valley is just one example of the way Floyd’s murder shook thousands of police agencies nationwide.”
Laid-off miners that work at two Iron Range mines “will be eligible for a full year of unemployment benefits under a bipartisan agreement between the House and Senate announced on Thursday,” according to the Minnesota Reformer. This is double the usual 26 weeks of unemployment benefits.
Crews continue to battle wildfires in northern Minnesota. FOX 9 reports that the Camp House fire is 90% contained, the Jenkins Creek fire is 47% contained, and the Munger Shaw fire is 95% contained.
Racket published their weekly roundup of free activities over the long weekend. This week they list 70 “100% free events like gallery parties, music, and films in the park, as well as free admission events like special happy hours, markets, and more.”
