The proposed Coastal Prairie Solar project in Iberville Parish is a multimillion-dollar investment. It will be a solar energy generation facility that will bring $50 million in additional tax revenue to Iberville Parish, according to an economic impact study conducted by Louisiana State University. This project is expected to serve a multitude of customers and have a positive community impact.
The Coastal Prairie Solar project is owned by a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, one of America’s largest energy infrastructure developers, leveraging all forms of energy across renewables, battery energy storage, natural gas, nuclear and other critical energy infrastructure. Coastal Prairie Solar project developer Allison Bernard shared more details about the project’s components, status and expected completion timeframe.
Why did NextEra Energy Resources choose Iberville Parish?
There are multiple factors that are evaluated during site selection. The fact that Iberville Parish is close to an existing robust transmission infrastructure and has collaborative landowners in an area made this an ideal site. Lastly, it’s important to select sites where we can minimize the impact on environmental and cultural resources. Iberville Parish provides that opportunity.
What are some of the key aspects of the Coastal Prairie Solar project?
This project will feature photovoltaic (PV) solar arrays capable of generating up to 175 megawatts of American-made, renewable energy. That is enough to power more than 26,000 homes. The project will be sited on privately owned land. It represents a $250 million investment and is expected to generate $50 million in additional tax revenue for the parish over the life of the project. it is also estimated that this project will create approximately 200 new local construction jobs in the next couple of years.
It’s important for people to know that this American-made source of energy will have a minimal impact on the environment.
Who are the expected Coastal Prairie Solar customers?
The primary target customers are wholesale electricity providers. Power generated at our facilities is delivered to these providers, who subsequently supply it to local businesses and households.
What is the timeline for the Coastal Prairie Solar project?
Developing a solar energy project has several key milestones. The first step is to identify close relationships with landowners and local officials, as well as community engagement. We have been in that process now, once we have engaged with the correct parish officials and our project has received permitting to be built, we can start the construction process. Construction generally takes 12 to 18 months. Coastal Prairie Solar progressing well and anticipated to become operational in 2027.
How is NextEra Energy Resources involved in the local community?
Since 2022, NextEra Energy Resources’ subsidiaries have invested more than $200,000 in the area, mostly through grants and sponsorships. White Castle High School in Iberville Parish was granted a $50,000 STEM classroom makeover to encourage students and expose them to possible career paths in STEM. Education and community engagement are important to NextEra Energy Resources, and we are committed to continuing these investments moving forward.
