SRP announces deal for enough solar energy to power nearly 600,000 homes

April 30, 2026

PHOENIX — Salt River Project (SRP) has reached an agreement with NextEra Energy Resources to generate 3,000 megawatts of new solar energy by the end of 2034, which would be enough to power almost 600,000 homes.

The agreement will add enough solar capacity to power 595,000 houses and is a big step in SRP’s goal to “more than double the capacity of its power system by 2035,” according to a press release.

To further accomplish that goal, the energy provider plans thousands of additional megawatts of resources, including renewable energy such as solar, as well as natural gas and battery storage.

“We look forward to working with NextEra Energy Resources to add the magnitude of new solar energy we need at the pace required to meet the increasing energy demand of our customers,” Bobby Olsen, the SRP associate general manager and chief power system executive, said in the release. “This approach will allow us to collaborate early in the project development process to minimize project risk and ensure the best outcomes for our customers and the communities where we operate.”

SRP’s and NextEra Energy Resources’ new deal will provide the construction of “500 (megawatt) of solar per year from 2029 through 2034,” the release said.

That is in addition to the already 1,000-plus MW of resources NextEra Energy Resources has developed across five projects for SRP.

“As America’s largest energy infrastructure builder, we are uniquely positioned to meet SRP’s needs,” Brian Bolster, NextEra Energy Resources president and CEO, said in the release. “We are excited to continue building on our long-standing relationship with SRP and to continue to invest in Arizona to help power the state’s growth with low-cost solar power.”

SRP currently has more than 3,000 megawatts of carbon-free resources, including 1,500 megawatts of solar and 1,570 megawatts of battery storage, supporting its grid and serving Arizonans.
