Stargate returns to TV with new Amazon Prime series

November 19, 2025

The iconic circular portal is powering up once again, and this time it’s opening a wormhole directly to Amazon Prime Video. After years of fan speculation and quiet hope, the beloved sci-fi franchise Stargate is officially returning to television with a major new series, promising to be a “bold new chapter” in a universe that has thrilled audiences for decades. But just what awaits viewers on the other side of this new gate? Here’s everything we know so far about Stargate’s long-awaited return.

Amazon revives Stargate

Amazon Prime Video has officially greenlit a brand-new installment of the iconic sci-fi property, Stargate. Simply titled Stargate, the new series hails from Amazon MGM Studios, which now holds the rights to the franchise. The project also reunites the franchise with Martin Gero, who steps in as creator and showrunner after previously serving as a writer and producer across the brand’s three prior live-action TV installments.

The Stargate saga traces its origins back to the 1994 feature film created by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, with Emmerich also taking the director’s chair. That movie laid the groundwork for a sprawling franchise that later expanded into three live-action series — Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009), and Stargate Universe (2009-2011). Over the years, the universe continued to grow with two direct-to-DVD films (both released in 2008), a short-lived animated series called Stargate Infinity (2002-2003), and even a 2018 digital-only spinoff titled Stargate Origins. The upcoming Stargate marks the franchise’s return to television for the first time since Stargate Universe wrapped in 2011.

Gero offered an intensely personal reflection on his return, emphasizing the deep roots the franchise holds in his career:

“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA,” Gero said in a statement. “I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world, I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

Gero—whose résumé also includes NBC’s Blindspot and Quantum Leap revival—will lead the creative team alongside executive producers Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Tory Tunnell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) of Safehouse Pictures, with original creators Devlin and Emmerich also joining the fold. Stargate veterans Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, who helped shape every previous series, will also return in advisory roles as consulting producers.

What’s the new Stargate series about?

Amazon is keeping the plot of the new Stargate under tight lock and key, offering only the promise that the show will usher in a “bold new chapter” for the franchise. Longtime fans may recall that as far back as 2018, MGM had tapped Wright to begin shaping a fourth series. Wright later confirmed in 2020 that his concept was intended as a true continuation of the three TV series rather than a full reboot.

During several podcast appearances in early 2021, he even revealed that his pilot script featured returning favorites Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder), Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), and Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) — written with the hope that the original cast might reprise their roles. Whether Amazon’s newly announced project is rooted in that earlier concept, however, remains a mystery.

Since Amazon finalized its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in March 2022, fans of the sci-fi classic have been eagerly awaiting a revival. That anticipation has finally paid off, as Amazon MGM Studios proudly ushers in a new era for the beloved franchise.

Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos,” said Nick Pepper, head of U.S. SVOD TV development at Amazon MGM Studios. “In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”
