State lawmakers send renewable energy storage plan to governor
January 7, 2025
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — House Democrats passed a plan Tuesday night to meet increasing electricity demand and provide reliability for residents.
Sen. Bill Cunningham (D-Chicago) and House Majority Leader Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston) said the bill can improve the state’s renewable energy incentive program to get wind and solar projects on the grid faster.
“This is a very important next step in energy policy in Illinois,” Cunningham said. “We will not be able to meet the increasing demand for electricity in our state without a robust energy storage plan.”
The proposal could also ensure the grid is built and maintained by union labor. However, Republicans argue the measure will only drive up utility costs.
“I just got my Ameren bill, and it is at least $75 more from the month of December this year than it was last year,” said Rep. CD Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville). “I guarantee the same will happen in January because look at the weather we’re having right now. All we’re doing is putting additional burden on taxpayers and ratepayers.”
The legislation passed out of the House on a 74-39 vote. Senators voted 39-16 to approve the plan Monday night. The bill now heads to Gov. JB Pritzker’s desk for his signature of approval.
