States to provide £500k to enhance environment

May 30, 2026

The States will provide about £500,000 to support the “continued enhancement” of Guernsey’s natural environment.

The Committee for the Environment and Infrastructure (E&I) said it had entered into a new five-year agreement with the Nature Commission as the environment delivered “significant economic, health and wellbeing benefits”.

E&I said it would provide about £100,000 per year over the next five years to help deliver on the States’ strategy for nature with island-wide nature recovery.

E&I President, Deputy Adrian Gabriel, said the commission – set up in 2023 – was “uniquely placed” to deliver “positive change to our natural environment and biodiversity”.

Gabriel said: “In their People and Nature survey, 83% of respondents said they were either concerned or extremely concerned about the pressure that Guernsey’s environment faces, while 92% were either concerned or extremely concerned about the loss of our biodiversity.

“Maintaining and restoring our natural assets is important for Guernsey’s economy, forming a core part of our tourism offering, and plays a fundamental role in island life.”

Previously, E&I provided £40,000 of grants every year through the Nature Commission for projects which benefit the island’s environment and local community.

The States added the contributions it made helped attract other funding with £321,000 in charitable grants and corporate donations secured by the commission in its first three years.

Jo Huxtable, chair of the Guernsey Nature Commission Board, said the latest funding meant it could provide “meaningful, long-term improvements for Guernsey’s natural environment”.

She added: “It also strengthens our ability to secure additional backing from other funding sources, including businesses and individual donors, helping to increase our impact.

“Nature is one of our island’s most precious assets, and investing in its protection and restoration benefits our economy, our quality of life, and the legacy we leave for future generations.”
