Stock market today: Dow rises on US.-Iran news; Powell comments up next (live coverage)

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and other major stock indexes traded higher ahead of Monday’s market open as President Donald Trump again said a deal may be near in the U.S.-Iran war. Still, oil prices extended their gains on the stock market today.

Meanwhile, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell is expected to speak just after the market open.

Ahead of the opening bell, Dow Jones futures rose 0.7%, as S&P 500 futures added 0.8%. Tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 futures moved up 0.7% in early morning trading.

Even though stocks moved up, U.S. oil prices climbed early Monday, with West Texas Intermediate crude trading near $101 a barrel. Brent crude, a global benchmark, approached the $115 mark.

Also, the 10-year Treasury yield declined to 4.36%. And bitcoin moved up to around $67,900.

Among exchange-traded funds, the Invesco QQQ TrustQQQ gained 0.8% as the SPDR S&P 500 ETF TrustSPY climbed 0.9% ahead of Monday’s market open.

Dow Jones Movers: Amazon, Nvidia, Merck

Inside the Dow Jones Industrial Average, AmazonAMZN and NvidiaNVDA both rallied roughly 1% in early morning action.

On the downside, MerckMRK edged lower in premarket action, the only Dow stock trading in the red ahead of the market open.

Stock Market Today: U.S.-Iran War News

President Donald Trump said indirect U.S.-Iran talks via Pakistan are progressing well and a deal could be made “fairly quickly,” according to the Financial Times on Sunday night.

Trump also said the U.S. could take Kharg Island, Iran’s oil export hub, “fairly easily.” He also said he would love to “take the oil in Iran.”

The Defense Department is readying plans for weeks of ground operations, The Washington Post reported Saturday night, citing U.S. officials. That comes as thousands of American soldiers, Marines and special forces arrive in the region.

Any potential operations would likely be more like extensive raids vs. a full-scale invasion, according to the Post report.

Earnings Reports This Week: Nike, Tesla

Dow Jones retail giant NikeNKE headlines this upcoming week’s earnings results. Those results are due out Tuesday after the market closes. Nike shares were up 0.5% before the bell.

Meanwhile, TeslaTSLA is expected to release first-quarter global deliveries, as well as energy storage deployed, likely before the open on April 2. On Thursday, Tesla released its own compilation of analyst estimates that was below some other consensus forecasts.

Tesla stock skidded nearly 3% Friday, closing at its lowest level since Sept. 10. Shares were up 0.6% in premarket action Monday.

Stock Market Today: Powell Set To Speak

Early Monday, Fed Chair Powell will take part in a moderated discussion at Harvard University. That discussion is scheduled to take place at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Later in the week, the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index for March drops Tuesday while the March jobs report is due Friday. The stock market will be closed for Good Friday, but the Labor Department will release the jobs report that morning.
