Stock Market Today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq Set to Open Down; Tesla, Nvidia, Plug Power, AMD,
October 21, 2025
The Dow is on track for its twelfth record close of the year.
The blue-chip index was up 341 points, or 0.7%, and on track to set a fresh closing high. It was also on track to close north of the 47,000 mark for the first time on record, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The Dow also set a fresh intraday record of 47,125.66 before paring its gain.
The S&P 500, up 0.1%, was just a touch below its Oct. 8 record. The Nasdaq Composite was down 0.2%.
The Dow was leading the other major indexes because it wasn’t exposed to struggles among certain utility stocks linked to the artificial intelligence trade like Vistra and Constellation Energy, which were both among the S&P’s worst performers. Tech was also lagging, while consumer discretionary, industrials, communication services, health care, and financials rose.
Market breadth was actually quite solid. More than 350 S&P 500 stocks were rising, but struggles among Alphabet, Nvidia, and Tesla were dragging on the index, too. The Dow, which gives less pull to such tech stocks since it’s a stock-price weighted index, saw 19 of its 30 stocks rise on the day.
