HAPPENING TODAY. THE CITY OF STOCKTON IS LAUNCHING EXPANDED ELECTRIC CAR SHARING SERVICES. OFFICIALS SAY THE EXPANSION WILL ALLOW EVEN MORE RESIDENTS OF UNDERSERVED NEIGHBORHOODS THE OPPORTUNITY TO RENT AFFORDABLE TRANSPORTATION. SO MANY PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY ARE EXCITED ABOUT THIS ONE. SO FAR. THERE ARE SIX CARS IN THE FLEET IN STOCKTON, AND DRIVERS CAN RENT THESE CARS WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT PAYING FOR HIGH GAS PRICES. AND YOU CAN CHECK OUT AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE FOR. GET THIS $4 AN HOUR OR $35 A DAY, AND THIS DOES INCLUDE INSURANCE AND ALL FEES. LATER THIS MORNING, THE CITY OF STOCKTON AND THE SAN JOAQUIN COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS WILL BE UNVEILING THE NEW CHARGING STATION AT THE OAK PARK SENIOR CENTER IN STOCKTON AND THE CAR SHARING PROGRAM WILL ALLOW EVEN MORE RESIDENTS WITHOUT RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION TO USE SOME OF THESE CARS TO GET TO SCHOOL, WORK, MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS AND TO RUN ANY ERRAND THAT THEY CHOOSE. OFFICIALS SAY THIS TRANSPORTATION SERVICE HELPS TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD BY PROVIDING INCREASED ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE RENTAL CARS FOR MORE PEOPLE IN OUR REGION. THIS IS GOING TO BE REALLY TRANSFORMATIVE FOR THOSE FAMILIES AND HOUSEHOLDS THAT DO NOT HAVE A PRIVATE VEHICLE AVAILABLE TO THEM, OR MAYBE THEY’RE SHARING PRIVATE VEHICLES ACROSS MULTIPLE MEMBERS OF A HOUSEHOLD. WHAT WE LEARNED FROM OUR OUTREACH IS THAT TRANSPORTATION IS REALLY THE BIGGEST BARRIER TO ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY. SO TO JOBS AND GETTING ACCESS TO SCHOOL. AND SO SOMETHING LIKE THIS COULD REALLY CHANGE. FAMILY MEMBERS CIRCUMSTANCES. OR RESIDENTS CIRCUMSTANCES IN TERMS OF ACCESSING KIND OF THOSE BIGGER GOALS, THOSE BIGGER DREAMS THAT THEY MAY HAVE FOR THEMSELVES. Stockton leaders are expanding access to affordable transportation with the launch of new electric car-sharing stations across the city.On Tuesday morning, the San Joaquin Council of Governments and the City of Stockton unveiled a new Míocar station at the Oak Park Senior Center.The expansion adds a six-car electric fleet and three new charging stations at key locations in Stockton. Officials said the goal is to give residents in underserved neighborhoods more affordable ways to get to work, school, medical appointments and other everyday needs.The service allows community members to reserve electric vehicles through the Míocar app, with rentals starting at about $4 per hour or $35 per day, including insurance. The cars even include cards to charge the cars for free for those longer trips.Leaders say the project is part of a broader effort to improve transportation equity across the region.The expansion is funded through a $1.8 million grant to improve access to clean transportation. Officials say the new cars and chargers will be located at several community hubs in Stockton, including the Oak Park Senior Center, Arnold Rue Community Center and Fair Oaks Library.”This is going to be really transformative for households that do not have a private vehicle, or maybe they are sharing private vehicles across multiple members of a household,” said Christine Corrales, manager of planning for the San Joaquin Council of Governments. “What we learned from our outreach is that transportation is really the biggest barrier to economic opportunity, so to jobs and getting to schools, so something like this could really change a family member’s circumstances, a resident’s circumstances in terms of accessing these bigger goals, bigger dreams that they may have for themselves.”Electric car sharing is designed to make transportation more affordable while also reducing emissions in communities that have historically faced transportation barriers.You have to be 21 years old with a valid driver’s license, and a good driving record to take part in the carsharing program.
