Tesla crashes into tree, utility pole before catching on fire in Raleigh

VIDEO: Police are investigating the circumstances around a single-vehicle crash that caused a Tesla to burst into flames on South Saunders Street and Maywood Avenue Saturday morning in Raleigh.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers were called to the crash around 2:30 a.m. where they found a Tesla on fire at the south Raleigh intersection.

A spokesperson for the police said the driver was not injured in the crash and vehicle fire, in which the police department’s investigation found that the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed before striking a tree and a utility pole.

The spokesperson said the Tesla then caught on fire. CBS 17 was at the scene when the vehicle was still engulfed in heavy smoke.

One lane was closed for hours Saturday morning until the Tesla was towed away around 1 p.m. on South Saunders Street.
