Tesla Driver Drives Through Fence and Into a Pool, Claims He Was Just Trying to Park

June 17, 2026

A driver in New Canaan, Connecticut, was attempting to park his Tesla near a local pool. He, however, ended up driving through a fence and into the pool itself, requiring first responders to rescue him and his vehicle.

As reported by News12, the incident occurred on Tuesday, June 16. At around 10.30 a.m., town officials detailed that a man was attempting to park his vehicle outside the public pool at Waveny Park.

However, while parking his Tesla, the man accidentally pushed on the accelerator instead. The electric car then drove through a set of trees, a fence, and then into the water, staying put right in the middle of the pool.

Fortunately, the pool was closed at the time. And, thankfully, there were people at the scene who managed to jump into action to save the man from drowning.

Lifeguards Spring Into Action

Present at the still-closed pool was Mike D’Urso, who is a lifeguard. According to him, he and other of his coworkers were “setting up the food court umbrellas” at the time.

Suddenly, Mike heard a “loud crash.” Then, he turned around and saw the Tesla in the water. Immediately, he knew he had to do something.

Mike and the other lifeguards quickly jumped into the pool, fully aware of the dangers that a submerged vehicle poses. He said, “My main concern was that the water level would rise above his head, so we had to get him out before that happened.”

Further Details

According to a New Canaan Fire Department (NCFD) press release cited by Greenwich Free Press, the driver, who was the only one inside the Tesla, was removed from the vehicle. First, however, lifeguards and officers with the New Canaan Police Department broke down a window and opened the door.

The man behind the wheel, who has not been publicly identified, was then transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Fortunately, he had not been injured as a result of the unexpected pool plunge.

However, authorities remained at the scene. After all, an electric car remaining submerged in water is dangerous.

Vehicle Removed

Multiple emergency teams responded to the scene. NCFD Interim Chief William Perritt detailed that, after the driver was rescued, a “vehicle removal plan” was devised. They were going to use a rotator tow truck.

Fire department staff members jumped into the water and attached slings to the vehicle. A tow company, then, successfully removed the Tesla and placed it on the flatbed tow truck. Fortunately, the car’s battery was not damaged, so no vehicle fire occurred.

Meanwhile, lifeguards such as Mike are being commended for acting quickly. Some even hailed him and his peers as heroes, including his own grandparents, leaving him with a big smile on his face.
