Tesla technology helped central Iowa authorities track down a suspect in a hit-and-run that seriously injured girl on scooter

INVESTIGATORS SAY THE GIRL WAS RIDING THIS SCOOTER IN ANKENY AT THE TIME. IT HAPPENED NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF NORTHWEST 24TH AVENUE AND HIGHWAY FOUR, 15 KCCI MARCUS MCINTOSH TELLS US HOW POLICE TRACKED DOWN THE SUSPECT. IT WAS IN THIS AREA, NORTHWEST 24TH AVENUE AND HIGHWAY 415, THAT A 14 YEAR OLD GIRL. SUNDAY EVENING SCOOTER RIDE ENDED WITH HER IN THE HOSPITAL. WE DID HEAR A LOT OF SIRENS. DOUG WIEDMEYER LIVES NEAR THE SCENE. HE DID NOT KNOW IT WAS A 14 YEAR OLD GIRL RIDING A SCOOTER THAT GOT HIT BY A CAR, WITH THE VEHICLE TAKING OFF UNTIL HE WATCHED THE NEWS. IT’S SAD, WHITMIRE SAYS. ACTIVITY ALONG THIS STRETCH OF ROAD, WHETHER IT’S SIRENS OR VEHICLES, IS NOT UNCOMMON. SPORTS CARS OUT. THEY LIKE TO DRIVE LOUD, ESPECIALLY, YOU KNOW, CROSSING THE INTERSECTION HERE, GOING DOWN TO THE LAKE. A LOT OF TIMES YOU’LL HEAR EVERYBODY JUST KIND OF OPEN IT UP, THROTTLE WIDE OPEN. THIS IS WHAT THE SCOOTER LOOKED LIKE AFTER THE HIT AND RUN INCIDENT. THAT LEFT A 14 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO WAS WEARING A HELMET, SUFFERING SERIOUS INJURIES. I KNOW SHE HAD SOME SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO ONE OF HER ANKLES. SHE HAD A BROKEN NOSE AND SHE HAD SOME ROAD RASH INVOLVED IN THAT ACCIDENT. ALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES CAUGHT A BREAK IN THE CASE. ALL THE INFORMATION THEY NEEDED PULLED TO A STOP AFTER THE ACCIDENT. ONE OF THE WITNESSES THAT ARRIVED ON SCENE RIGHT AFTER THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED WAS DRIVING A TESLA. THAT PERSON WAS ABLE TO PROVIDE US CAMERA FOOTAGE FROM THEIR VEHICLE, WHICH THEY PROVIDED TO THE DEPUTIES ON SCENE, WHICH IN TURN THEY USED SOME OF THE OTHER LOCAL AREAS, FLOCK CAMERAS TO TRACK THAT VEHICLE AND GET A LICENSE PLATE OFF OF IT. INFORMATION THAT ABOUT 90 MINUTES AFTER THE HIT AND RUN LED TO THE ARREST OF 18 YEAR OLD MARIO PALAFOX MANZANO, LIEUTENANT CHANCE CAN’T STRESS ENOUGH THE IMPORTANCE OF WEARING A HELMET AND RIDING SAFELY IN POLK COUNTY. A 14-year-old girl was seriously injured Sunday evening in a hit-and-run while riding an electric scooter near North West 94th Avenue and Highway 415, authorities said.Neighbors said they heard the aftermath.“We did hear a lot of sirens,” said Doug Wiedmeier, who lives near the scene.Wiedmeier said traffic noise and speeding are common in the area.“Get the sports cars out there, like to drive loud,” he said. “Especially crossing the intersection here, going down to the lake. A lot of times, you hear everybody just kind of open it up, throttle wide open.”Investigators said the girl was wearing a helmet when she was hit. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.”I know she had some substantial damage to one of her ankles. She had a broken nose and road rash,” said Lt. Mark Chance, Polk County Sheriff’s Office.Deputies said a witness driving a Tesla provided video from the vehicle, helping investigators identify the suspect. Authorities also used local Flock cameras to track the vehicle and get the license plate number.About 90 minutes after the crash, deputies arrested 18-year-old Mario Josue Palafox Manzano in connection with the hit-and-run.Authorities said the case also underscores the importance of wearing a helmet and riding safely.
