Texas has appointed several cryptocurrency executives to its committee that’s tasked with overseeing the state’s strategic Bitcoin (CRYPTO: $BTC) reserve. 

Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock appointed four outside members to the state’s Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Advisory Committee as Texas moves forward with one of the first crypto reserves in America.

The five-member committee will advise the comptroller on recommendations related to Bitcoin’s valuation, custody, and risk and reserve management.

The appointees include CleanSpark (NASDAQ: $CLSK) President Gary Vecchiarelli, Cormint Data Systems CEO Jamie McAvity, Southern Methodist University law professor Carla Reyes, and investment executive Laurie Dotter.

CleanSpark and Cormint Data Systems are each Bitcoin mining companies. 

The Texas Comptroller’s office has also issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking a provider that will be responsible for acquiring, holding, managing, and reporting on the state’s Bitcoin holdings.

Texas is the third U.S. state to enact a strategic Bitcoin reserve, following similar moves by Arizona and New Hampshire.

But unlike those other states, Texas has established a standalone reserve fund managed by the comptroller’s office and funded it with a $10 million U.S. position in BlackRock’s (NYSE: $BLK) Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF). 

While U.S. states are moving forward with strategic Bitcoin reserves, America’s federal government in Washington, D.C. has gotten bogged down on the issue. 

Lawmakers in Washington recently introduced the “American Reserve Modernization Act,” which would codify a national Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and lock government-held Bitcoin into the reserve for at least 20 years.

However, that legislation still needs to work its way through Congress and be approved.
