The Family Dynamics (& Family Secrets) of the ‘We Were Liars’ Cast & Characters

June 18, 2025

In the mood for a summer mystery? We Were Liars, the new Prime Video series based on the novel by E. Lockhart, takes us to Beachwood–the private island owned by the Sinclair family–and the mystery of what happened at the end of Summer 16. The main characters are four cousins (and one non-relation) who call themselves “the liars” and have spent summers together since they were eight years old, a.k.a. Summer 8, playing and getting into trouble.

The liars grow up together until one summer changes everything for them and their family members. Like any show about a big family, it does take a minute to tell cousins from siblings and learn which child belongs to which parent. Here’s what you need to know about the cast and crew of We Were Liars.

Emily Alyn Lind plays Cadence Sinclair Eastman

Cadence is the protagonist of the series. One summer, Summer 16 to be precise, she’s dealing with burgeoning feelings for a childhood friend and the next she’s recovering from an injury, pill addiction, and post-traumatic amnesia.

You might have seen Emily on the Gossip Girl reboot as Audrey Hope, starring in the Babysitter movies on Netflix, or as the younger version of Amanda Clarke/Emily Thorne on Revenger. She also has some spooky adjacent roles in Doctor Sleep and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Shubham Maheshwari plays Gat Patil

Gat is Cadence’s mom’s sister’s boyfriend’s nephew as well as her love interest. (It’s not as House of the Dragon as it sounds.) Gatand Cadence are best friends, but they’re also summer friends. That makes their already complicated feelings for each other even weirder. They’ve never experienced bad times–only happy, sunny, beach times.

With the exception of a short film, this is Shubham’s professional acting debut!

Joseph Zada plays Johnny Sinclair Dennis

Johnny is the tempestuous, party-loving cousin. He has a little brother and his mom is the one dating Gat’s uncle. But, you know, like most eldest boys in rich families, his carefree nature may be a facade for some dark secrets.

If you don’t know the Australian actor now, you will soon. Zada’s going to be starring in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping as Haymitch Abernathy. He’s going to be in Zoe Kazan’s new adaptation of East of Eden for Netflix, too, with Florence Pugh and Mike Faist, playing the role made famous by James Dean in Elia Kazan’s 1955 film.

Esther McGregor plays Mirren Sinclair Sheffield

Mirren is slightly more withdrawn and “weirder” than her cousins Cadence and Johnny and feels a little left behind. She has two little sisters. She’s also an artist… or, at least, she’s trying to be.

Esther is a model whose previous acting credits include Babygirl, The Room Next Door, and Obi-Wan Kenobi starring her father, Ewan McGregor.

Caitlin FitzGerald plays Penny Sinclair

Penny is Cadence’s mother. She’s the picture of buttoned-up New England repression. She keeps up appearances in public and maintains the competition between her and her sisters with insults in private.

You know Caitlin as Willa on Succession, Libby on Masters of Sex, Simone on Sweetbitter, and Serena on Unreal. I also recommend watching her in Station Eleven, a post-apocalyptic series on HBO that’s like 75% less upsetting than The Last of Us.

Candice King plays Bess Sinclair

Bess, one of the adult Sinclair sisters, is Mirren’s mother and in total denial about how bad her marriage is.

That’s Caroline Forbes to you, thank you very much! But besides The Vampire Diaries (and The Originals and Legacies), Candice appeared in How I Met Your Mother, Supernatural, Greek, Juno, Love Hurts, and Reba McEntire’s Christmas in Tune.

Mamie Gummer as Carrie Sinclair

Carrie is Johnny’s mother and the bohemian Sinclair sister. She’s also a recovering drug addict. For those reasons, perhaps, she doesn’t value appearances and the pressure to be perfect like Bess and Penny.

Mamie is probably best known for the third season of True Detective, as well as playing daughter to her own mother Meryl Streep in Ricki and the Flash, The Good Wife and The Good Fight, the titular role in Emily Owens MD, and so much theatre in New York and Los Angeles.

Rahul Kohli plays Ed Patil

Ed is Carrie’s boyfriend who brought his nephew, Gat, into the Sinclair family to complete the “liars” eight years before the show begins. He’s a bit of an outsider in the family but lovingly along for the ride.

Rahul is part of the Mike Flanagan troupe, appearing in The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, The Fall of the House of Usher, this year’s The Life of Chuck, and the upcoming Carrie miniseries. He also had a main role on iZombie, Death and Other Details, and voices the Batman villain Scarecrow on Harley Quinn.

David Morse plays Harris Sinclair

Harris Sinclair is the family patriarch, father to Penny, Bess, and Carrie and grandfather to Cadence, Mirren, and Johnny. (As well as the littles. Let’s not forget about the little cousins!)

David Morse is an Emmy and Tony nominee best known for shows like St. Elsewhere, House, and the John Adams mini-series. He played George Washington, NBD. He’s also in movies like The Hurt Locker and The Green Mile.

Wendy Crewson as Tipper Sinclair

Tipper is the queen to Harris’s king. Everything her daughters know about sweeping things under the rug they learned from her.

Wendy Crewson is an award-winning Canadian actress who was also in Air Force One, Room, The Covenant, and played the ex-wife of Tim Allen’s character in the Santa Clause movies. She also currently plays Colter Shaw’s mother on Tracker.
