The first trailer for Justin Kurzel‘s epic miniseries adaptation of Richard Flanagan’s 2014 Booker Prize-winning novel has dropped and in it, we see rising Australian star Jacob Elordi portray a young doctor haunted by a love affair as he struggles to survive the brutal treatment as a prisoner of war during the Second World War.

The Amazon Prime Video Australia series stars Elordi as Dorrigo Evans, a young man from Tasmania, who before the war has an affair with his uncle’s wife. Dorrigo joins the army as Australia joins the fight against the Axis powers in WWII, but his regiment is captured, and they are made to construct the infamous Burma railroads, that led to the death of countless numbers of Allied POWs.

The miniseries also stars Ciarán Hinds (as an older Dorrigo), Odessa Young, Olivia DeJonge, Heather Mitchell, Show Kasamatsu, Thomas Weatherall, and Simon Baker.

After premiering two episodes at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, Narrow Road received gushing praise from critics. In his review, The Hollywood Reporter‘s critic David Rooney wrote, “Based on the first 90 minutes, The Narrow Road to the Deep North has potential to stand alongside films like Peter Weir’s Gallipoli and Bruce Beresford’s Breaker Morant as a nuanced and compassionate study of Australians at war.”

Kurzel, who is coming off the critical success of the feature films Nitram and The Order, directed all five episodes of Narrow Road, and the series has been adapted by Shaun Grant, who wrote Kurzel’s Snowtown as well as Nitram.

Amazon Prime Video Australia will launch Narrow Road on April 18. The BBC holds the rights in the U.K., Sky has the rights in Germany and NBCUniversal has the rights in Latin America. U.S. rights for Narrow Road are still be confirmed.

The miniseries is produced by Curio Pictures, and distributed internationally by Sony Pictures Television. Jo Porter and Rachel Gardner from Curio Pictures executive produce. Richard Flanagan, Grant and Kurzel are also executive producers with Alexandra Taussig serving as producer. The series will be distributed internationally by Sony Pictures Television.

Shot in New South Wales, principal production funding for Narrow Road was provided by Screen Australia, with assistance from the NSW Government through Screen NSW’s Made in NSW and PDV Funds.
