The road devours 24% of the electric car’s range in Girona so that the cost per trip plummets
May 17, 2026
Marc Fernàndez, a resident of Girona, has bought a 100% electric car with a maximum range of 462 kilometers to cover his family’s travel, which amounts to between 20,000 and 25,000 kilometers per year. On the highway, he estimates that this figure drops to about 350 kilometers.
Here lies one of the keys to the transition to electric vehicles. The approved range exceeds 460 kilometers, but on the road, it is reduced by around 24%, although the usage savings remain significant for those who frequently make long journeys.
Fernàndez calculates that he covers those 350 kilometers with an electricity cost of about five euros. With his previous combustion engine car, the same journey cost him more than 35 euros.
Savings Compensate for a Highway Range of About 350 Kilometers
The driver was looking for a vehicle with low consumption and little maintenance. The decision came after considering the usual use of the car within the family and the annual volume of kilometers they travel from Girona.
“With the family, we usually travel between 20,000 and 25,000 kilometers a year; we wanted a car that consumed little and didn’t require too much maintenance” – Marc Fernàndez, resident of Girona
In the city, he adds, the vehicle’s behavior changes due to regenerative braking, which returns part of the energy to the battery. On the highway, however, he places the real range at around 350 kilometers.
Fernàndez summarizes this difference with everyday car use. In his words, on the highway, the real range is around 350 kilometers, far from the maximum of 462 kilometers advertised for the model.
Som Mobilitat Already Exceeds 150 Vehicles Distributed Throughout Catalonia
Shared electric mobility is also gaining ground in Catalonia. Som Mobilitat, a cooperative founded in Mataró in 2017, currently has a fleet of over 150 vehicles distributed throughout the territory.
“At first, it was seen as something very innovative, but now it’s becoming increasingly clear that the future and the present lie with electric vehicles” – Ricard Jornet, founding partner of Som Mobilitat
The cooperative plans this expansion linked to a model with fewer owned cars. Its proposal is to offer an alternative to households that currently maintain two or three private vehicles.
Furthermore, Som Mobilitat plans to incorporate family cars with greater autonomy. The goal is to surpass current models, which range between 250 and 300 kilometers.
State Aid for 2026 Still Awaits Announcement and Deadlines
The entry cost continues to be one of the factors that weighs most on the purchase. The State has announced aid for electric cars in 2026, but has not yet specified the call or the payment deadlines.
In Fernàndez’s case, the subsidies influenced the initial decision, although they did not determine it completely. The buyer maintains that the aid was decisive in considering the purchase, but adds that the family would have taken the step anyway.
Som Mobilitat wants to strengthen its offer with family vehicles that go beyond the current ranges of between 250 and 300 kilometers.
