There’s No Egg Shortage at the White House
April 22, 2025
On Monday, hours after the pope died, President Donald Trump announced that he was “bringing religion back in America” at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. The event — which involves relay races where children roll eggs along the grass using wooden spoons — has been a tradition since 1878. But this is the first time the festivities involved corporate sponsors, which apparently included an “AI-Powered Experience and Photo Opportunity,” courtesy of Meta, and a “Bunny Hop Stage” sponsored by YouTube. Also of note: Amid record spikes in egg prices, CBS reported that the White House had 30,000 real eggs available for guests to decorate and roll around on the lawn.
While Trump has indicated that he is aware there’s an egg shortage, apparently he couldn’t bear to let that impact his Easter celebration. “They were saying that for Easter, ‘Please don’t use eggs. Could you use plastic eggs?’ I say, ‘We don’t want to do that,’”he bragged earlier this month.
In fairness, it’s typical for the Easter Egg Roll to use a huge amount of hard-boiled eggs; the New York Times reports that last year’s event under Biden actually had twice as many. However, unlike in previous years, egg prices have hit record highs in recent months as bird flu has spread among poultry farms, forcing farmers to slaughter millions of hens. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average retail price for a dozen eggs was $6.23 in March, though consumers in many areas have seen prices higher than $10. The Times recently reported that eggs are so expensive that some Americans have been dyeing potatoes for Easter.
As in previous years, the eggs for the Egg Roll are supplied by the American Egg Board, which relies on donations from farmers across the country. Emily Metz, the president and CEO of the Egg Board, told NBC that using real eggs for the event “will not create additional strain on the nation’s egg supply or egg prices” because they only use small and medium eggs, which “are not meant for the retail and grocery channels.” As for Trump, he’s convinced that egg prices are no longer an issue. “We have too many eggs,” he claimed at a press conference last week. “If anything, the prices are getting too low.”
On the other hand, I guess it’s nice to know that Trump’s inner circle had to spend the day suffering through the stench of thousands of hard-boiled eggs.
