This is the No. 1 reason people applied for a medical marijuana card in Kentucky

As of Sept. 15, 20,319 electronic written certifications were submitted by medical cannabis practitioners, according to a spokesperson for the Governor’s office.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — We now know the top condition Kentuckians applying for a medical marijuana card are diagnosed with.
WHAS11 News sent an Open Records Request (ORR) to the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Office of Medical Cannabis (OMC) for the information.
A spokesperson for the OMC said the number of qualifying medical conditions collected from written certifications by practitioners does not match the total number of card applications.
They said practitioners might have needed to submit multiple electronic written certifications for the same person due to the previous request expiring, and the patient might have more than one qualifying condition.
A spokesperson for the Governor’s office said another reason may be because a patient who received a written certification may not have applied yet.
As of Sept. 15, almost 20,320 electronic written certifications were submitted by medical cannabis practitioners, and 13,925 patient card applications were approved in the portal, according to a spokesperson for the Governor’s office. Just over 90 people are approved “caregivers,” or people who help patients with purchasing and administering medical cannabis.
The No. 1 condition the office is seeing is chronic pain, followed by post traumatic stress disorder, cancer, multiple sclerosis, chronic nausea and seizure disorder, according to data received from the ORR.
In a Team Kentucky update on Sept. 4, Gov. Andy Beshear said while the dispensaries are waiting on the cultivators and processors, he believes the dispensaries will be operating by the end of the year.
“I think everybody is working as hard and as fast as they can, but they’re wanting to make sure they do it right as well,” he said.
