This Remake of a 127-Year-Old Sci-Fi Classic Declared the Worst Movie of 2025
December 23, 2025
The end of 2025 is now nearing, and with it comes all manner of “best of” and “worst of” lists, with Amazon’s unforgivably awful modern-day remake of a 127-year-old science fiction classic topping the list on Metacritic. Similar to the popular (or unpopular, depending on who you ask) Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic takes the weighted average of professional critic reviews and gives each movie a score from 0-100. And the worst of 2025 has a score of just six. No, that’s not a typo.
The review aggregator website has now named its bottom 15 from the last year, with the list featuring movies from
Netflix,
Prime Video, action outings, horror flicks, and even Reacher star Alan Ritchson. Before we get to the worst of the worst, we’ll start at #15, with the ranking kicking off with action comedy Old Guy starring Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz.
In at #14 is the Colleen Hoover adaptation Regretting You, followed by the biographical drama Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness from semi-canceled actor/director Johnny Depp at #13, and the latest attempt at a Smurfs movie at #12. The maligned musical Juliet & Romeo is in at #11, with Netfix’s big-budget action sci-fi movie The Electric State landing hard at #10 with a score of 30/100.
Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Jenna Ortega’s thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow is ranked #9, followed by horror sequel The Strangers: Chapter 2, action thriller Shadow Force, and video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 at #8, #7, and #6, respectively. But even these cinematic mistakes look like masterpieces against some of the Top 5.
The Mechanic director left Jason Statham behind for this year’s Bride Hard, starring Rebel Wilson, which lands at #5 on Metacritic’s worst movies of 2025 with a score of 23. The Sylvester Stallone-led action crime thriller Alarum is in at #4, also with a score of 23. Which could have been worse, considering it holds a score of 0% on fellow review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Taking third place in the worst of the worst of the year is the Nicolas Cage Western outing Gunslingers, which scored just 20/100, with MovieWeb’s own Will Sayre saying it “ultimately feels like a disappointing mish-mash of everything you’ve seen from the genre thus far.”
In at #2 and taking silver (but a bad kind of silver as this is the worst list, so maybe it’s already turned your skin green), is Reacher icon and everyone’s favorite new action star Alan Ritchson and his Prime Video action-comedy Playdate. Also scoring 20, Playdate finds Ritchson joining forces with Kevin James and has been called “bewildering” and “dull” by critics. Here’s hoping Ritchson finds the success he deserves with some of his upcoming action efforts.
Finally, taking the #1 spot on Metacritic’s Worst Movies of 2025 is Universal Pictures and Amazon Prime Video’s War of the Worlds, which, for reasons known only to those involved, casts Ice Cube in the lead and mutates H. G. Wells’ seminal 1898 novel into a screenlife story about a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officer who stares at his monitor while humanity falls to an alien invasion.
