This simple £9 Amazon gadget was my favourite Christmas present

January 4, 2026

You know you’re getting old when you get genuinely excited about a reading light – but I will rave about this product for as long as possible, because I can’t imagine life without it now. I’ve tried Kindles and I just don’t seem to enjoy them as much as holding an actual book with proper pages.

I like to read before bed because I think it really helps me drift off to sleep, but the light from my lamp just isn’t strong enough to see the pages properly. Before Christmas, I resorted to using the flash on my phone to read my books, and it wasn’t exactly relaxing with a bright torch light.

I asked for a reading light as a present from my husband, and I can honestly say it was one of my favourite presents. For me, the best kind of gifts are the useful ones, and I was most impressed with this one that was less than a tenner.

I’d seen a few of these reading lights on Amazon before, but had no idea how good they actually were. Currently, it’s 47% off, knocking the price down to £8.99 instead of £16.99 (information accurate at the time of writing).

What impressed me the most was how relaxing this light is. It clips onto your pages firmly, and comes with three different light colours that are dimmable including amber light, mixed light and white light.

My favourite light option at the moment is the amber light with gives the pages a warm glow. I’ve found this particular light colour to be really relaxing, and it makes me feel nice and sleepy before bed.

The light is bendable and can be moved around to suit you. It has over 31k reviews on the Amazon website globally, so it’s not just me that’s obsessed with the item.

On the Amazon website, the full product description reads: “The reading light adopts a horizontal head design, which has a wider irradiation range. 19 high-quality LED lamp beads are arranged in a straight line and the ABS material lampshade makes the light higher, uniform and soft, provides stable and sufficient lighting without disturbing others. It is an ideal choice for night lighting.”

Without sounding too dramatic, I do think this gadget has vastly improved my night-time routine. It helps me feel relaxed on an evening after a long day, and makes reading my book a much softer experience on the eyes.

After using the gadget for the first time I was genuinely left wondering how on earth did I read my books before this, I was that impressed. Some may think this is a boring gift, but in my opinion, it’s absolutely brilliant.

It also means I can lie down properly while reading, as opposed to having to position myself in a certain way so I can actually see the words on the pages. I’ve also found that my sleep has improved massively after using this gadget, because I want to read more, and at night it makes me nice and sleepy.

Maybe I’m getting old and boring now, but I absolutely love my reading light. It just goes to show you don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds on a Christmas present for it to be well received.

You can purchase the Gritin 19 LED Book Light for £8.99 in the sale here (prices accurate at the time of writing).
