Re “Port scrambles to stage Big Bay Boom on July 4th, but ‘this may all go away,’ one commissioner warns” (April 16): It’s time for change! The Big Bay Boom fireworks create a toxic fog of fine particles, poisonous aerosols and heavy metals that harm air, water and soil — posing serious risks to birds, wildlife, pets and people. Pollutants like barium, chromium, lead and antimony can cause serious health issues, including asthma attacks, kidney disease and cancer. Perchlorate compounds used in fireworks disrupt thyroid function. The Air Quality Index near fireworks often reaches the hazardous level which states everyone should avoid all physical activities outdoors.

The Coastal Commission is right — now is the time to switch to drones for a safer, eco-friendly celebration.
