Significant snowfall is expected to continue into Friday evening in Toronto, according to an alert from Environment Canada.

Snow will continue this afternoon before tapering off from west to east this evening, with total amounts reaching up to 12 cm, according to the alert. For many areas, the heaviest snow will end by 6 p.m.

“Snow will become locally heavy at times this afternoon resulting in areas of reduced visibility,” Environment Canada said in the Boxing Day alert.

The alert said to allow extra time for travel on Friday as the accumulation of snow will affect roadways and sidewalks.

Roads and sidewalks are being salted across the city, according to a social media post from the City of Toronto.

Plowing will begin once the snow accumulation is more than two centimetres on sidewalks and bike lanes, over five centimetres on major roads and eight centimetres on residential streets, according to the city’s post.
