President Trump cuts $7.6 billion in clean energy projects, hitting Washington hard with a $1.1 billion loss.
SPOKANE, Wash. — Billions of dollars in clean energy funding are being cut by the Trump Administration and some of the hardest hit areas include Eastern Washington.
President Donald Trump announced Wednesday night his administration is canceling $7.6 billion in clean energy projects across 16 states, including Washington, which will now lose $1.1 billion.
The Administration says this comes as the government is shut down. In response, the White House claims the cuts are necessary.
The Department of Energy says a review showed 223 energy projects were proven to be no longer viable. On Thursday, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson responded.
His office released a statement condemning the decision, citing 11 federally funded projects totaling $1.1 billion that will be impacted.
The recipients of these grants include a technology company in Spokane County known as Spokane Edo LLC, at $5.3 million, as well as four energy projects from Washington State University, totaling $9.8 million.
These projects include renewable energy to liquid fuels and developing new E/V charging stations.
Governor Ferguson called the decision outrageous, saying it will lead to the loss of thousands of clean energy jobs and prevent the state from advancing to what he calls cost-effective climate technologies.
KREM 2 is still working to learn more about the cuts and speak to those being impacted. We’ll keep you updated as we do.
