TikTok could be shut down in the United States as early as this weekend, as the Trump administration scrambles to broker a deal that would allow the app to remain operational. A decision is expected by Saturday. Vice President JD Vance told Fox News on Thursday that the White House is “working hard” on a resolution, with an announcement potentially imminent.

In January, former President Donald Trump granted TikTok a 75-day extension to continue operating. That grace period now nears expiration. Vance attended a key meeting Wednesday to evaluate bids for TikTok’s U.S. business. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is reportedly among the interested parties, and AppLovin (NASDAQ:APP) disclosed its intent through a regulatory filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The potential ban stems from a law signed by President Joe Biden in 2024 requiring TikTok’s parent company ByteDance to divest its U.S. operations due to national security concerns. Lawmakers argue the app collects excessive user data, a claim TikTok disputes.

Industry experts are divided on whether the app will be pulled. Some believe users may temporarily lose access, as occurred in a previous blackout. Others predict a deal or another 90-day extension may delay any shutdown.

Meanwhile, TikTok is accelerating its expansion in Europe. Reuters reports the company will launch its shopping feature, TikTok Shop, in France, Germany, and Italy next week. Large retailers including Carrefour and AboutYou are already on board.
