‘TSITP’ Star Rain Spencer to Lead Amazon’s New YA Thriller from ‘We Were Liars’ Author

October 10, 2025

If you loved The Summer I Turned Pretty and were obsessed with We Were Liars, then Genuine Fraud, the newest YA thriller in production at Amazon MGM Studios, will surely become your next go-to.

If the name rings a bell, that’s because Genuine Fraud will be adapted from E. Lockhart’s novel of the same name. And if that name also rings a bell, it’s because she is the author of the original We Were Liars book and also served as a writer and producer on the show adaptation.

To keep things within the Prime Video family, Genuine Fraud will not only star but also be executive-produced by The Summer I Turned Pretty alum Rain Spencer. Sinead Daly, who also worked as a writer and co-executive producer on Jenny Han’s hit show and Hulu’s Tell Me Lies, will serve as the series creator.

Sounds promising enough? Well, we have compiled everything we know about the project below!

What will Genuine Fraud be about?

Genuine Fraud will be an adaptation of E. Lockhart’s 2017 book of the same name, which has been described as a “mind-bending thriller” as well as “addictive and shocking.”

The official synopsis for E. Lockhart’s book is as follows: “Imogen lives at the Playa Grande Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. She spends her days working out in the hotel gym and telling other guests how she was forced out of Stanford. But Imogen isn’t really Imogen. She’s Jule. And she’s on the run from something. Or someone. Which means…where is the real Imogen?

Rewind: Jule and Imogen are the closest of friends. Obsessed with each other, even. Imogen is an orphan, an heiress; she and Jule spend a summer together in a house on Martha’s Vineyard, sharing secrets they’d never reveal to another soul. But that was months ago. Where is Immie now? And why is Jule using her name?”
