In Turkey’s Iliç province, a 2024 landslide at a major gold mine buried nine workers and ignited debate over its future. While some locals want the mine reopened for economic reasons, environmentalists and geologists warn of potential catastrophe due to toxic cyanide used in extraction, which has already affected the Euphrates River and threatens groundwater, particularly given the mine’s location on an earthquake fault line.
