UNK biology professor discussing environmental chemicals and their impact on our health
October 27, 2025
WHAT: University of Nebraska at Kearney Science Café
HOSTED BY: Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society
TITLE: “The Links Between Environmental Chemicals and Cardiometabolic Diseases”
TOPIC: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Our chemical environment has changed substantially in the past few decades, and recent large-scale human studies have implicated a novel link between exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and cardiovascular disease. In this Science Café talk, UNK associate biology professor Yipeng Sui will discuss the potential risks of atherosclerosis and obesity when we are exposed to certain plasticizers and clinical drugs.

PRESENTER: Sui received his doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from Shandong University in China and began his career in cardiovascular disease research when he was a postdoctoral fellow and research scientist in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He worked as visiting assistant biology professor at Baker University in Kansas for one year before joining UNK in 2021. His lab uses cells and mice models to study the effects of environmental chemicals on lipid homeostasis, atherosclerosis and obesity-associated metabolic disorders.
TIME: 5:30 p.m.
DATE: Monday, Nov. 3
PLACE: Ockinga Auditorium, UNK campus
