US Stock Market: Johny Srouji to lead unified hardware team as Apple prepares for leadership transition
April 20, 2026
Apple Inc. is restructuring its hardware organisation under a newly unified leadership model, consolidating its hardware engineering and hardware technologies divisions into a single group. According to a memo shared with employees and reported by Bloomberg, the reorganisation will divide the combined unit into five core areas: hardware engineering, silicon, advanced technologies, platform architecture, and project management.
The overhaul follows a broader leadership transition in which Johny Srouji has been appointed chief hardware officer, while John Ternus has been elevated to chief executive officer, with Tim Cook expected to move into the role of executive chairman. Bloomberg reported that Srouji outlined the new structure as part of efforts to streamline operations and better integrate teams responsible for developing key products such as the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
Under the new structure, hardware engineering will be led by Tom Marieb, a former Intel executive who joined Apple in 2019. The silicon division will be overseen by Sri Santhanam, while Zongjian Chen will head advanced technologies. Platform architecture responsibilities will fall to Tim Millet, and Donny Nordhues will lead project management across the organisation, according to Bloomberg.
The restructuring marks a return to a more centralised hardware model that Apple previously used more than a decade ago. Bloomberg noted that the company had operated under a unified hardware group during the tenure of former executive Bob Mansfield before splitting responsibilities in 2012. The current move effectively reverses that decision, bringing hardware development back under a single leader.
Srouji’s expanded role also signals his growing influence within Apple’s leadership hierarchy. Bloomberg reported that he had previously considered leaving the company but will now sit just below the CEO in the management structure. The shift underscores Apple’s renewed emphasis on hardware engineering as a central pillar of its long-term strategy.
The leadership transition itself represents one of the most significant changes at Apple in years. Bloomberg indicated that Tim Cook, who has led the company for more than a decade, has endorsed Ternus as his successor, reinforcing continuity while ushering in a new phase of leadership.
