US stock futures are pointing lower this morning, with E mini S&P 500 contracts down about 1.3% and Nasdaq 100 futures off roughly 1.5%, as investors react to a spike in government bond yields and a fresh jump in oil. The US 10 year yield is around 4.22%, which raises the cost of borrowing for households and companies, while crude above US$100 feeds worries that everyday energy and transport costs stay high. The big question now is whether the Federal Reserve keeps interest rates higher for longer, which would pressure rate sensitive areas such as small caps, real estate and highly valued growth stocks.
With rates and energy costs rising, many investors are shifting toward 66 resilient stocks with low risk scores before volatility picks up further.
