USVC: A New $500 Minimum Venture Fund Opens Private Markets to All US Investors

A new investment product called USVC is designed to shake up venture capital norms by offering retail investors access to high-profile private companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Elon Musk’s xAI, with a minimum investment of $500. The fund, provided by investment infrastructure firm AngelList, is open to all U.S. investors, according to a source from Yahoo Finance.

Democratizing Access to Private Markets

AngelList co-founder and USVC Investment Committee Chairman Naval Ravikant posted on X that early-stage technology represents the modern version of adventure capital, comparing it to historic voyages of discovery. He noted that ordinary people cannot invest in private companies until they are no longer interesting or accessible, and that by the time a stock goes public, most of the alpha is gone. USVC aims to change this by allowing individuals to participate regardless of their net worth, bypassing accredited investor rules that typically require a net worth exceeding $1 million.

How USVC Operates

Investors in USVC pool their capital, which is then distributed across three distinct investment vehicles: emerging fund managers, company growth rounds, and secondary equity sales. The fund’s FAQ clarifies that this is not an index fund, noting that venture returns concentrate in a handful of outliers and that the best deals are not open to everyone. The strategy involves using judgment, access, and data to select the right managers and opportunities, similar to how institutional endowments approach venture investing.

Instead of traditional venture investing fees that include carrying charges and a percentage of profits, USVC charges a flat 1% management fee. The fund may also not require an exit through an IPO or acquisition to pay out investors. Ravikant stated that the aim is to let investors redeem up to 5% of the fund every quarter, though he could not guarantee that action.

Current Holdings and Market Context

Based on data from the end of March, USVC has invested approximately 44% of its capital into seven private firms, with exposure to xAI representing its largest holding. As the fund adds exposure to other firms, investors in USVC will gain corresponding exposure. Separately, Robinhood announced on Wednesday that its Robinhood Ventures Fund I purchased $75 million worth of stock in AI company OpenAI, offering another avenue for retail investors to gain exposure to private startups through a publicly traded fund.
