Brazilian mining giant Vale has entered into a strategic agreement with OQ Alternative Energy to advance its decarbonization efforts in Oman, aiming to transition its industrial operations to renewable energy sources. This development, reported by Zawya, marks a significant step towards sustainable industrial practices in the region.
The agreement sets a framework for developing renewable energy solutions to power Vale’s concentrator at the port of Sohar and to meet the energy requirements of the upcoming Green Metallic Mega Hub in Dukm. It outlines cooperation areas related to energy supply, land coordination, and long-term planning, ensuring the integration of renewable energy into Vale’s operations.
Najla Zuhair Al Jamali, CEO of OQ Alternative Energy, emphasized the broader implications of this partnership, stating that it sets the stage for a new model of sustainable industrial development in Oman, powered by clean energy sources. This initiative aligns with Vale’s ongoing investments, including a $627 million joint venture with Chinese steelmaker Jinnan Iron & Steel Group, aimed at constructing a concentrator in Sohar. Scheduled for operation in 2027, this facility is expected to process 18 million tons of low-grade iron ore annually, yielding 12.6 million tons of high-quality concentrate each year.
