Venice Locals Protest Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez Wedding: ‘No Space for Bezos’
June 16, 2025
Protesters in Venice are making their message loud and clear before Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez host their wedding in the Italian city.
“No space for Bezos,” several signs and banners read ahead of the nuptials between the billionaire founder of Amazon and his fiancée.
Venice has been gearing up for the couple to trade vows, and city hall officials said in a statement to NBC News the city was prepared to host the event in hopes to reassure tourists and disgruntled locals alike.
About 30 of the city’s 280 water taxis have been reserved for the weekend, plus regular taxi and public water transport services will continue, city hall officials said in the statement.
City hall officials added that only three or four hotels throughout the city will be used for wedding festivities, and that the city is used to hosting major events like the Venice Film Festival, or the wedding of George and Amal Clooney back in 2014.
Still, some local Venetians have blamed local authorities for allowing the city to be overrun with tourists.
Protests mentioning overcrowding have occurred in Italy, Spain and Portugal in recent weeks, but Venice’s mayor has said the Bezos-Sanchez wedding is not all that controversial.
“We are very proud,” Mayor Luigi Brugnaro told the Associated Press earlier this month, adding he hoped he would get the chance to meet Bezos.
“I don’t know if I will have time, or if he will, to meet and shake hands, but it’s an honor that they chose Venice,” Brugnaro said. “Venice once again reveals itself to be a global stage.”
The Municipality of Venice said in a statement in March that the city is equipped to handle the event.
“The many speculations and fake news circulating about Jeff Bezos’ wedding are completely unfounded,” the municipality said. “Only 200 guests will have been invited and therefore it will be easy for Venice to accommodate such an event, without any disruption whatsoever to the city, its residents and visitors.”
The municipality added: “The organization have categorically not booked large amounts of gondolas or excessive numbers of water taxis and it is their utmost priority to make sure the city functions as normal, for all, with no abnormal disruption to anyone.”
Luca Zuin, a spokesperson for the mayor of Venice, told CNN that Bezos and Sanchez’s celebrations are scheduled from June 24 to 26, and will reportedly take place on the Amazon founder’s superyacht anchored in the Venice lagoon.
The guest list has been kept secret, but Vogue reported it could include A-listers like Katy Perry, Eva Longoria and a few members of the Kardashian-Jenner family.
Sanchez, 55, gave some insight into the wedding planning process on TODAY in 2024.
“Very excited about it, thinking about the dress. I have to say, I do have a Pinterest. I’m just like every other bride,” Sanchez said. “I never thought at 54 — I’m going to be 55 … that you know I’d be an author and that I’d be getting married. I mean, life is just beginning.”
Sanchez led an all-women crew to space for about 11 minutes in April aboard a rocket built by her fiancé’s company, Blue Origin, alongside Perry, Gayle King and more.
After landing back on Earth, she spoke about seeing Bezos, 61, before the rocket took off.
“I was just like, ‘Yeah, I had to come back.’ I mean, we’re getting married! That would be a bummer for me,” she said through laughter.
Bezos and Sanchez announced their engagement in 2023. Bezos was previously married to MacKenzie Scott from 1993 to 2019, and they share four children.
Sanchez was previously married to Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell. She shares two children with Whitesell, and another son with former partner and retired NFL player, Tony Gonzalez.
