Vermont officials make Earth Day pledge to block Trump environmental rollbacks

April 22, 2026

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont officials are reflecting on this Earth Day about what more can be done to protect the environment as the Trump administration rolls back federal environmental protections.

“Our environment, clean air, water, even scientific truth itself have all come under attack from the Trump Administration,” said Vermont Treasurer Mike Pieciak.

Leaders also emphasized the work the state has already done to combat climate change, from reducing plastic waste to investing in renewable energy and sustainable farming.

“We must remind ourselves that even though we are seeing a steady rollback of environmental work across the country and messaging denying the existence of climate change, Vermont can and will continue to be a leader in protecting our environment,” said Vermont House Speaker Jill Krowinski, D-Burlington.

But critics say Vermont’s climate goals are too ambitious and too expensive.

“We have to set reasonable goals. Ones that don’t disproportionately affect lower-income individuals, and ones that are tangible,” said Rep. Michael Boutin, R-Barre.

It comes as the Trump administration strips away greenhouse gas emission standards, air quality rules, methane limits, and toxic wastewater protections.
