MONROE, Mich. (WDIV) — Two suspects crashed a stolen vehicle into a Michigan cannabis store and attempted to set it on fire Sunday, but ended up lighting themselves ablaze instead.

Surveillance video shows a Jeep crashing through the front door of the Pure Cannabis Outlet in Monroe. Two suspects hop out, one runs toward the back and grabs a handful of product from another room. The other starts pouring gasoline all over the counters.

The suspects then light the fire, but ignite themselves in the process. One of them was still on fire as he ran through the parking lot.

Owner questions motive

Mike Bahoura, owner of the Pure Cannabis Outlet, said the break-in seemed like a simple smash and grab until he watched the video.

“We’ve been here for over three years and have never had a break-in or anything like this, so it was quite a shock to everybody,” Bahoura said.

Bahoura said the incident doesn’t feel random and questioned if the store was targeted, possibly by a competitor.

“I never thought anybody would take it to this level and maybe they didn’t. I don’t know, but you know, it definitely feels targeted,” Bahoura said.

Store turns incident into marketing

The shop’s marketing team posted parody videos online and bought gas cans to use as tip jars.

“We are going to allow our budtenders to use them as tip jars to have some more fun with it,” said Briana Pittman, floor manager.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident as an arson. The Jeep used to ram the store was reported stolen out of Detroit.

Built-in fire suppression sprinklers helped put out the fire quickly, which meant the store was able to open later that same day.
