Von der Leyen’s ex-spokesman Mamer becomes top environment official

June 17, 2025

Eric Mamer, the former chief spokesperson of the European Commission, will become its top environmental policy official, the Commission announced today.

Mamer, a career EU civil servant, served as Ursula von der Leyen’s spokesperson during her first term, from 2019 to 2024. Since being replaced by Paula Pinho last year, he has been attached to the Commission’s internal think tank, called IDEA.

The Capitals scooped the news of his imminent appointment to lead DG Environment last week.

Von der Leyen reshuffled the upper echelons of the environment department two months ago when she moved Florika Fink-Hooijer to lead its Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority.
