A Bitcoin mine in Grundy County is destroyed, after a fire broke out Sunday night inside of the main facility, KWWL reports. The structure housed dozens of computers, working to mine bitcoin for sale, and was owned by the MiningStore company. With construction in 2019 before opening in 2020, it’s the first facility the company opened to mine bitcoin, which has now expanded to over a dozen more facilities.Wellsburg Fire Chief Greg Winger says they were dispatched to the area between 6 and 6:30 Sunday night, with flames and smoke visible from the area.Emergency Management Coordinator for Grundy County Chase Babcock says crews contained the fire to keep it away from the other nearby structures.”It’s a lot of protecting these other outside trailers, storage containers. There was flames out the backside, they had a windbreak on that backside- that was on fire, so it was pretty much just contain it to right there, and at that point by the time we got here we knew it was a complete loss,” he said. With frigid temperatures, crews faced obstacles while battling the flames.”The big thing with the cold is we can’t have the pumps freeze up. So water’s got to keep running through there, circulating pumps on the truck, so we don’t have that happen. Hoses tend to freeze, and then as they’re sitting in water they’ll freeze to the ground. I know fire departments were thawing out hoses last night, and then we have portable tanks, that we dump water into. Hinges were frozen in one so we had to be really careful not to destroy equipment,” said Babcock.Inside the structure, dozens of computers work each day to mine bitcoin. With such a large energy source, Babcock says they knew the fire would be destructive.”If you think about it, it’s a lot of computer systems. So you look at your computer everyday, and just to have a building full of those and the heat they put off, we knew it would be pretty destructive,” he explained.JohnPaul Baric is the CEO of MiningStore. He sent KWWL the following statement about the fire:”It’s devastating to see the first facility I built in 2019 be burnt to the ground by a space heater that was left running near a workstation. Thankfully nobody was hurt and the facility was unmanned at the time.”Right now, Fire Chief Winger says they have not determined a cause for the fire yet. A cost estimate has also not been determined, though the damage is extensive.”I know it’s at a complete loss, so it’s got to be up there,” said Babcock.» Download the free KCCI app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google PlayGet the latest headlines from KCCI

A Bitcoin mine in Grundy County is destroyed, after a fire broke out Sunday night inside of the main facility, KWWL reports.

The structure housed dozens of computers, working to mine bitcoin for sale, and was owned by the MiningStore company.

With construction in 2019 before opening in 2020, it’s the first facility the company opened to mine bitcoin, which has now expanded to over a dozen more facilities.

Wellsburg Fire Chief Greg Winger says they were dispatched to the area between 6 and 6:30 Sunday night, with flames and smoke visible from the area.

Emergency Management Coordinator for Grundy County Chase Babcock says crews contained the fire to keep it away from the other nearby structures.

“It’s a lot of protecting these other outside trailers, storage containers. There was flames out the backside, they had a windbreak on that backside- that was on fire, so it was pretty much just contain it to right there, and at that point by the time we got here we knew it was a complete loss,” he said.

With frigid temperatures, crews faced obstacles while battling the flames.

“The big thing with the cold is we can’t have the pumps freeze up. Hinges were frozen in one so we had to be really careful not to destroy equipment,” said Babcock.

Inside the structure, dozens of computers work each day to mine bitcoin. With such a large energy source, Babcock says they knew the fire would be destructive.

“If you think about it, it’s a lot of computer systems. So you look at your computer everyday, and just to have a building full of those and the heat they put off, we knew it would be pretty destructive,” he explained.

“It’s devastating to see the first facility I built in 2019 be burnt to the ground by a space heater that was left running near a workstation. Thankfully nobody was hurt and the facility was unmanned at the time.”

Right now, Fire Chief Winger says they have not determined a cause for the fire yet. A cost estimate has also not been determined, though the damage is extensive.

“I know it’s at a complete loss, so it’s got to be up there,” said Babcock.
