Wei Wu’s startup Heatrix wins the 17th IDEE Förderpreis

November 23, 2025

Dr.-Ing. Wei Wu (born 1983) is the founder and managing director of Heatrix, a Bremen-based startup that she co-established with her co-founder, Dr.-Ing. Stefan Gasow-Lux.

With a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Stuttgart and a doctorate in energy technology from RWTH Aachen, she contributes extensive technical expertise. During her doctoral research at the Institute for Solar Research at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), she developed advanced technologies for CO₂-neutral process heat generation. She subsequently advanced these technologies to market readiness in her first startup, HelioHeat, which she sold in 2021.

The concept for Heatrix emerged from the realization that energy-intensive industries urgently require CO₂-neutral alternatives for high-temperature processes. As a mother of two, Wei Wu sees herself as having a heightened responsibility to help address climate change, while also serving as a role model for other women in technology and entrepreneurship.

Combating climate change with high-temperature air – Heatrix provides CO₂-neutral process heat for energy-intensive industrial applications at a lower cost than fossil fuels. Sectors such as steel, cement, and chemicals require process temperatures exceeding 600°C, which are currently supplied predominantly by fossil fuel combustion and are responsible for over 12% of global CO₂ emissions. Heatrix has developed a modular, electric air heater—functionally analogous to a high-power industrial air heater—that utilizes renewable electricity and, in conjunction with a thermal energy storage system, delivers continuous, competitively priced hot air up to 1,500°C. The patented design is characterized by simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and modularity, enabling industrial operators to reduce emissions while mitigating exposure to volatile fossil fuel prices. No comparable commercial solutions exist for this temperature range.

Heatrix aims to play a pivotal role in the decarbonization of industrial processes by displacing conventional gas-fired burners. The company positions its technology as a key enabler for the energy transition in CO₂-intensive industrial sectors. Through pilot deployments across multiple industries, Heatrix is facilitating the transition to climate-neutral production while simultaneously supporting grid stability during the integration of renewable energy sources.
