Well leak contained in Lafourche Parish marsh after days of response effort

November 6, 2025

Response crews stopped a natural gas leak from a well in a marsh in Lafourche Parish on Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.

The leak was first reported on Friday morning and led to the placement of thousands of feet of containment boom to prevent the further spread of a sheen. Now that the spill has been stopped, responders will shift their focus to environmental cleanup, Coast Guard Lt. Joshua Turner said in the statement.

Government response workers remain on site to monitor air and water quality. A private company, Cudd Well Control, took the lead in stopping the leak. The Federal Aviation Administration has restricted flights over the site.

The spill, which occurred about three miles southeast of the town of Golden Meadow, is not expected to affect residential areas or Highway 1, which connects Golden Meadow and Grand Isle.

The well, owned by Castex Energy Inc., a Houston-based company that operates about 130 wells in Louisiana, was first drilled in 2012, according to state records.

Rep. Joe Orgeron, R-Golden Meadow, said he had spoken with the Coast Guard, which confirmed that the leak was under control.

“They did cap it,” he said. “They are diligently doing their cleanup.”
