What Role Will AI Play in Meta’s Metaverse?

On October 28, 2021, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook’s parent company was going to be rebranded as Meta Partners, Inc. Along with this, he confirmed that the company was committed to developing and running a metaverse. The idea behind this was to build a digital world where people could interact with one another and use online features in a more meaningful, productive way.

People use the Internet for all sorts of things these days. The Metaverse aims to offer a space where a wide range of activities can take place. These can include shopping, socializing, education, online gambling, and even things like concerts.

Artificial intelligence, commonly known as AI, has taken off in recent years, thanks in part to the popularization of ChatGPT and other similar services. It’s had a massive impact on the Internet and how people acquire things when they go online. While it can be useful, it’s generated much controversy, and many people are actively against its implementation in various areas.

AI has currently taken over many roles and improved our overall experience. Many websites also have chatbots that are powered by AI. They’re meant to be faster, more ‘intelligent’, and more capable than human customer service agents. Plus, they can be available every hour of the day. These AI features will be more commonplace and may become more advanced as the Metaverse improves.

Back in 2019, Meta Partners released the online virtual reality game Horizon Worlds, which came with a fully integrated game creation system. This was seen as a sort of test run for the Metaverse. At its peak in February 2022, it had around 300,000 daily users, though by October of the same year, this figure had decreased to 200,000.

The poor performance of Horizon Worlds was an indication that demand for the Metaverse wasn’t as great as had been anticipated. Also, Horizons World received criticism for things such as user safety, glitches, and the high price of the virtual reality headsets needed to access the game. Meta Partners has been working to address these criticisms. It’s also no doubt been working to ensure the Metaverse doesn’t receive the same negative comments.

But things aren’t looking so good for the Metaverse right now. While a lot of money has been poured into it – at least $10 billion – there’s still no launch date, and details about it are few and far between.

In 2023, Mark Zuckerberg said in a post that Meta Partners was going to pivot away from the Metaverse and shift its focus to AI instead. This doesn’t mean the Metaverse has been cancelled; it just implies that the company is going to dedicate more time, money, and energy to AI than the Metaverse.

It hasn’t been confirmed that development on the Metaverse has stopped altogether. It’s likely that the project is still being worked on, just at a slower pace than previously. Meta Partners has rightly turned its attention to AI, but it doesn’t seem to be neglecting the Metaverse altogether.

In fact, it could be the case that Meta Partners is trying to integrate AI into the Metaverse. AI features are becoming more common these days. There’s one embedded into Google searches, for example. Type in a regular search prompt, and at the top of the results, you’ll get an AI-generated summary that can be just as helpful and relevant as the leading results.

Meta Partners knows that AI has a lot of potential, and it seemingly wants to integrate AI into the Metaverse in the best way possible. The Metaverse has a lot riding on it, and there are many different factors that could lead to its failure. If people don’t enjoy spending time in it and don’t find it safe or secure, they’re not going to bother with it.

What Can We Expect in the Future?

The Metaverse has to be a top-quality offering when it eventually launches. It needs to be as appealing and worthwhile as possible; otherwise, it stands a chance of not doing well. AI can help refine what it offers and make it better for people who use it. Only time will tell when Meta Partners decides to launch it.

AI can be a highly advanced virtual assistant of sorts. It can tell users all about the Metaverse and its many offerings, and help them navigate it in a meaningful way.
