They say there are no endings or beginnings. But that isn’t true for The Wheel of Time, as it’s been cancelled at Prime Video, according to Deadline. Based on the popular fantasy series by Robert Jordan, the show was always going to be a risky endeavor. It’s an epic story told over more than a dozen books with a sprawling cast and intricate lore. Adapting the material was never going to be easy, and the show will end after just three seasons of said adaptation.

The first season premiered in November 2021 to mixed results. But, most importantly, the show was the most watched of that year and paved the way for the show to continue. Critical reception has been kinder to the show as it’s gone along. However, it’s likely that the show never recovered from early stumbles and that the high cost to produce the show resulted in the cancellation.

Led by showrunner Rafe Judkins, executive producer and star Rosamund Pike and lead Josha Stadowski, The Wheel of Time‘s viewership has remained high but has decreased over the three seasons. With such a high financial attachment, Amazon likely saw the show as yielding diminishing returns rather than a growth opportunity.

While the cancellation may have been straightforward from a network perspective, it’s left fans incredibly frustrated. Even if not every fan of the book series felt the show was a faithful adaptation, viewers won’t get to witness the story of “The Dragon Reborn” conclude. There will be no endings for Rand or the rest of the ta’verin.

For now, The Wheel of Time joins the ranks of ambitious fantasy adaptations cut short before their conclusion. Its legacy will be debated, both for what it achieved and what it never got the chance to. Whether through future adaptations or the enduring pages of Jordan’s novels, the Pattern will continue to call to fans. But this turning of the wheel, it seems, has come to an end.
