Amazon’s Kindle e-readers have long been at the top of the pyramid when it comes to digital reading. That’s why Amazon regularly finds itself on our list of the best e-readers that you can buy. But it wasn’t perfect, and 2024 saw Amazon finally fix the Kindle’s biggest problem — it didn’t come with a color screen. The launch of the Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition changed the game, and right now you can get one of your own for just $225, saving $55 off the usual asking price.

That special price matches the lowest we saw during Amazon’s Big Spring Sale, but we can’t promise that it’ll hang around for long. It’s listed as a limited-time deal right now, so make sure to order yours soon if you want to get this price. Note that this is the version of the Kindle Colorsoft that doesn’t have ads on its lock screen, too, making it an even better deal.

The Amazon Kindle Colorsoft has a similar overall chassis design and weight to the popular Kindle Paperwhite. Like the Paperwhite, the Colorsoft has an IPX8 rating, so you can actually submerge it in water and it will be perfectly fine. So yes, the Colorsoft is safe to take to the tub so you can read the Invincible comics while enjoying your bubble bath. The 7-inch e-ink screen is now equipped with a Kaledio color filter, which makes color viewing possible, and it still has an adjustable backlight and glare-free display.

Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money.

There is a slight catch behind the color part of the Colorsoft, however. While the Colorsoft has a 300 ppi monotone display like the other Kindles, that is cut in half when you switch to the color mode, so it’s only 150ppi. This means there is a smidge less crispness when viewing in color. On the other hand, the color will bring more life into your comics, graphic novels and magazines. If you’re also the type to highlight text while reading, this also means that you can use and see different colors for the highlighter, too.

The Amazon Kindle Colorsoft isn’t the only color e-reader out there, but it does have access to the Kindle Store. If you have Amazon Prime, you can also access Prime Reading and even Kindle Unlimited if you subscribe to that, too. All of these are great options for discovering new titles to read, especially with 32GB of internal storage. As far as battery life, a single charge should last up to eight weeks, and it uses USB-C for charging.

One of the concerns about the Colorsoft when it first launched was that the price was a little high, which makes this sale a particularly good one. If you balked at the $280 sticker price, slicing $55 off that makes this a little easier to swallow. The Colorsoft is also a much better choice if you tend to read a lot of comics, graphic novels or magazines. Otherwise, the color screen doesn’t offer anything new if you are only reading basic books, in which case the regular Kindle or Kindle Paperwhite may be a better choice. Just remember, Amazon’s sale event ends today, so you don’t have much time to snatch one up.
