Woman issues warning after son eats entire bag of ‘cannabis gummies’

OXFORDSHIRE, U.K. (WKRC) – A woman is warning others after her son ate an entire bag of “cannabis gummies.”
According to the BBC, a 17-year-old boy from the United Kingdom was taken to the hospital when he developed chest pains after consuming an entire bag of cannabis gummies, which were branded to look like Starburst candies.
The teen’s mother told the network that her son had never had edibles before, and said he had taken one in his bedroom, but finished the entire bag after he felt nothing, not realizing that an edible can take more than an hour to take effect.
A professor with the University of Bath, Chris Pudney, works alongside law enforcement in the U.K. to test cannabis edibles, and told the network that the teen likely consumed a “massive dose,” as the pack suggested each gummy contained 68mg of THC.
Pudney told the BBC that the total number consumed by the teen would be an “incredibly high” dosage “and for some people would probably be quite risky.”
In a statement to the network, Thames Valley Police said the department recognized “the concern these gummies pose, particularly due to their appeal to younger individuals.”
“Every time you use one of those products you really don’t have a great idea of the dosage of THC you’re getting,” Pudney said when speaking with the BBC. “In some cases we even found it’s not THC at all. It’s actually a synthetic drug that we normally find in prisons called spice.”
Recreational marijuana remains illegal in the United Kingdom, and the BBC reported that the use of cannabis edibles was “an increasing trend.”
Professor Tom Freeman with the University of Bath said manufacturers were utilizing candy brands for their packaging because “the youth of today are a big, lucrative market for commodities such as cannabis, nicotine and alcohol.”
“For cannabis the typical age of prevalence is around 15 to 16,” Freeman told the BBC. “We then see an escalation into the late teens and early 20s.”
