The Diocese of Youngstown has released its “Care for Creation” action plan for parishioners across its six-county region, including Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana Counties.

The plan is inspired by the teachings of the late Pope Francis who underscored the importance of environmental respect within the Catholic faith.

Bishop David J. Bonnar established a committee to develop the initiative. In a statement, Bishop Bonnar said the committee includes representation from various segments of the diocese, such as families, parishes, schools, and social service entities. He added that the committee researched current diocesan efforts and identified potential avenues for increased environmental care.

The “Care for Creation” action plan is structured into seven sections:

  • Caring for Creation as Individuals and Families
  • Caring for Creation as a Parish
  • Caring for Creation as a School
  • Caring for Creation as a Faith Formation Process
  • Caring for Creation for Health Care
  • Caring for Creation for Human Services
  • Caring for Creation as a Diocese

The plan’s cover features an image and a description of Saint Francis of Assisi, recognized as the patron saint of ecologists, emphasizing his connection with nature and advocacy for a sense of kinship with all creation.

In a letter included within the plan, Bishop Bonnar encouraged parishioners to embrace “ecological conversion,” highlighting the significance of sustainable living and environmental stewardship. He referenced Pope Francis’ call for prompt and decisive action in alignment with the objectives.

R.J. Mangan, Director of the Office of Peace and Justice, chaired the Diocese of Youngstown Creation Care Team responsible for the plan’s development.
